On October 5, 2026, OpenAI unveiled a new ad format: an ad appears while ChatGPT is generating an image for the user. ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people a week — and even at that size, the company is calmly putting ads into its own product. If that is normal for the most valuable AI company in the world, it is normal for you too, with an account of 300 followers.
This article is not about buying ads inside ChatGPT. It is about the conclusion that follows from the news: ad space exists for anyone who has an audience at all. Size is a question of price, not of permission.
What OpenAI did: short and factual
Before: ads in ChatGPT looked like a card under a finished answer — grocery delivery under a recipe, for example. Now there is an image format as well: while the model generates a picture, a brand ad is shown next to it.
| Item | How it stands |
|---|---|
| Announced | October 5, 2026 |
| Where the new format runs | Test from October, US only, limited set of advertisers |
| ChatGPT ads overall | More than 60 countries; Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan are not on the lists |
| Plans with ads | Free and Go. No ads on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu |
| Who sees them | Only logged-in adult users |
| Weekly ChatGPT audience | 1.2 billion people (OpenAI figure) |
OpenAI makes three promises about the format: the ad is labeled, it sits separately and is not pasted into the generated image, and it does not influence the model's answers. The last one cannot be checked from outside yet — it is the platform's own statement.
Alongside the format, OpenAI expanded measurement: there are now 22 analytics partners, plus Negative Phrases for "qualified" advertisers, a configurable attribution window, and a score for the quality of conversion data. In plain words: a brand can now see which purchase came out of the chat.
How fast this grew
What matters here is less the news itself than the speed.
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| February 9, 2026 | ChatGPT ads launch, CPM $60 |
| April 2026 | CPM drops to roughly $25 |
| May 5, 2026 | Self-serve ad manager opens |
| August 31, 2026 | Annualized revenue run rate hits $1 billion — in under 200 days |
| October 5, 2026 | Image format and 22 analytics partners |
Eight months ago there were no ads in ChatGPT at all. Today it is a channel on a billion-dollar run rate. A product people love starts selling space inside itself — that is how every platform works, from television to a chat with a neural network.
Why this is a conversation about you, not about OpenAI
The most common stop sign for a beginning creator sounds like this: "it's too early for me, I only have 200–300 followers, who would pay me anything." Read this news as the answer.
- Nobody waits for the right moment. OpenAI put ads into a product that is not comfortably profitable yet and that people use for free every day. The platform did not wait until it felt "big enough."
- Ads do not ruin a product when they are honestly labeled. That is the whole OpenAI announcement: a label, a separate slot, no interference with the answer. The same principle works in your account: viewers are not bothered by advertising, they are bothered by deception.
- In short video, followers are not the main number. Reach in TikTok, Shorts and Reels comes from recommendations, not from your subscriber base. A video from an account with 300 followers can pull 2,000 views or 200,000. A brand pays for views, not for the number in your profile.
What brands actually count
This is the key part. Through 2026 the logic of large advertisers shifted from "I'll buy a post from a big creator" to "I'll pay for a measurable result." The OpenAI announcement is exactly that: 22 analytics partners exist to count purchases, not impressions.
For a small account that is good news. When payment follows the result, you don't have to pass a gate based on audience size: you publish the video, and the payout is calculated from the views it collected.
Here is the order of magnitude by format — numbers from briefs we have covered on the site (as of their publication dates):
| Format | What you do | Payout range |
|---|---|---|
| Banner over your own video | Film whatever you normally film, add the client's banner on top | from $0.08 per 1,000 views |
| Clips from shows and streams | Cut an approved source into verticals | around $0.2 per 1,000 views |
| Ready-made video on your account | Publish the video you are sent | $0.7–1 per 1,000 views |
| Your own UGC from a brief | Film it yourself following the brand's brief | $2–3 per 1,000 views |
Let's do the honest math, with no rosy numbers. An account with 300 followers, five videos a week, 3,000 views per video on average — that is 15,000 views. On a banner brief that works out to about $1.2 a week; on your own UGC, about $30–45. That is not a salary. But it is your first money, your first numbers in a portfolio, and a sense of which format works for you. One lucky video at 200,000 views changes the arithmetic immediately.
Five steps for a small account
- Count views, not followers. Take your last 10 videos and find the middle value by views. That is the working number for a client — the one they will multiply by the rate.
- Pick a format where audience size doesn't matter. A banner over your own video, a ready-made video to publish, clips, UGC from a brief — all four pay per view, not per channel size. What UGC is and how to get into it with no experience: What Is a UGC Creator? Get Paid to Make Videos, No Followers Required.
- Take your first pay-per-view brief. Start with the banner format: the video topic is up to you, you don't reshoot anything for the brand, you just add the banner in the edit. An example of such a brief: New Banner Brief: $0.08 Per 1,000 Views for Any Video Topic.
- Label the advertising. Do what OpenAI does: label it. In the video, use the paid-partnership toggle or a line in the description. In Russia online advertising is also formally marked: an "advertising" label, advertiser details and registration of the creative through an ad data operator. Usually the client or the platform handles that — ask upfront who does it for your brief.
- Measure the result and show it. A screenshot of views, the number of clicks, a promo code or a UTM tag. A client used to purchase-level attribution will ask "how many came," not "how many followers." Whoever has the numbers ready gets the next brief. If your platform has no official monetization, the pay-per-view options are gathered here: How to Earn on TikTok, Shorts, and Reels in Russia in 2026—With No Official Monetization.
What this means for brands
The AI-chat channel is no longer experimental: there is an ad manager, analytics and attribution. From the CIS there is no direct access to it, but the "pay for the result" logic is available right away — through briefs for creators paid per view. And yes, creators with small accounts work fine in that logic: you are paying for views, not for profile size.
What is still unknown
A few things OpenAI did not explain:
- the advertisers in the test are not named;
- there is no word on how many ads a person sees per image generation;
- there is no separate price for the image format — only the general CPM history;
- there is no announcement on whether and when the format leaves the US;
- there is no independent check of the main promise — that ads do not influence the model's answers.
The official announcement page on openai.com did not open from our side while we were preparing this article, so every figure here was cross-checked against three sources: Search Engine Land, ppc.land and unite.ai. If OpenAI clarifies the details, we will update the material.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make money from advertising with 300 followers?
Yes, when payment is per view rather than per placement. In the banner, ready-made video, clipping and UGC-from-a-brief formats, audience size is not a filter: what counts is the views a specific video collected.
How many followers do you need to take advertising?
For pay-per-view work there is formally no threshold. For direct "pay per post" deals a threshold appears, because the brand is buying your name. That is why pay-per-view is the easier place to start.
How much do they pay per 1,000 views?
In the briefs we have covered, the range runs from roughly $0.08 for a banner over your own video to $2–3 for your own video shot from a brand's brief. The exact rate depends on the brief, the topic and the country of your audience.
Do you have to label advertising in your videos?
Yes. Platforms have a paid-partnership toggle for this, and in Russia online advertising is marked separately: an "advertising" label, advertiser details and registration of the creative through an ad data operator. Ask the client who handles the paperwork.
Will ChatGPT ads come to Russia?
Russia is not on the published lists of countries where ChatGPT ads run. You cannot buy them from Russia directly.
On Prime Oracles, brands post briefs, creators pick them up themselves and get paid per view — account size does not affect access to briefs. Open briefs sit in the Content Rewards section, and you take one with the Accept Task button; brands post a brief of their own at primeoracles.com.
