You've posted a video. An hour goes by, and it still has zero views. Your first thought: "shadowban." While this can be a real restriction, the cause is often much simpler. We’ll break down what’s actually happening with your video, how to check it in five minutes, and what to do if TikTok has, in fact, restricted you.
Does a shadowban really exist?
TikTok doesn't officially use the term "shadowban." Instead, it has an official status: "Not eligible for the For You feed." A video with this status remains on your profile and is discoverable via search, but it won't appear on the For You feed—which is where the vast majority of views come from.
The key difference from a mythical ban is that TikTok is transparent about this restriction. It appears in the video's analytics, and you can appeal the decision.
TikTok has three levels of enforcement:
| Measure | What Happens to the Video |
|---|---|
| Removal | The video is removed, and a strike is issued to the account. |
| 18+ Only | The video is only visible to adults. |
| Not for the For You feed | The video remains live but is not pushed to the For You feed. |
If an account accumulates many such videos, TikTok may restrict the entire account by temporarily removing it from recommendations and making it harder to find. This can happen even without direct violations, simply due to a large volume of ineligible content.
Why your video has 0 views
The video is still under review
After you upload a video, it's first checked by an automated system. Borderline cases are reviewed by a human moderator. While the review is in progress, you may get no views at all. If the numbers start moving after a few hours, it was just a standard review, not a restriction.
Unoriginal content
For clippers, this is the number one reason for low views. TikTok does not recommend videos that add nothing new, such as:
- Someone else's video re-uploaded in its entirety.
- Someone else's video with only subtitles or a few lines of text added.
- A simple compilation of other people's clips.
- Videos with a watermark or logo from another platform.
- QR codes overlaid on the video.
Blurring a watermark won't help: a clip from a movie or concert is still unoriginal content, even with a blurred logo.
Content ineligible for the For You feed
TikTok's guidelines list topics that won't be deleted but also won't be recommended. The most common violations for short-form video creators include:
- Engagement baiting (e.g., "like for like," asking for likes, follows, or gifts).
- Ads that don't use the dedicated setting to be disclosed as "advertisement."
- Realistic AI-generated content without a label indicating it's AI.
- Dangerous stunts and challenges.
- Sexually suggestive content, smoking, or shocking footage.
- Unverified news about disasters or elections.
Music
Business accounts may only use music from TikTok's Commercial Music Library or tracks for which they hold a license. Otherwise, the audio will be muted, and the video may be removed.
Creator's age
Videos by creators under 16 are not recommended to non-followers. Live streaming and monetization are only available to users 18 and older.
Fake engagement and automation
Bought followers, likes, "warm-ups," scripts, and mass repetitive actions are strictly prohibited. TikTok removes fake metrics and may restrict or block the account.
Region
TikTok determines your location using your SIM card, IP address, and device settings, even if location services are turned off.
Since March 2022, TikTok has restricted its services in Russia. Users with a Russian address primarily see an old feed and cannot reliably publish new videos. As of 2026, this restriction remains in effect. According to creators, videos posted using workarounds get unstable views and sometimes disappear, making zero views a common occurrence.
How to check if you're restricted
Step 1. Account check
Go to your Profile → ☰ menu → TikTok Studio → "More tools" → "Account check." This tool reviews your last 30 posts, comments, profile, and messages. It shows which videos are ineligible for the For You feed and highlights any violations. It also indicates whether TikTok considers your video original.
If your status is "in good standing" with no red flags, there is no formal restriction on your account.
Step 2. Video analytics
Open the analytics for the specific video. If it's ineligible for the For You feed, a warning will appear at the top of the "Performance" tab. To see this, you must have analytics enabled in TikTok Studio.
Step 3. Traffic sources
Check where your views are coming from. The majority should come from the "For You" feed. If three or more consecutive videos have almost zero views from this source, with traffic coming only from your profile and search, you are likely facing a restriction.
Unreliable: Checking from another account
Searching for your video from a different phone or by hashtag is pointless. Everyone's feed is personalized, so the result proves nothing.
If your account check is clean and you have no warnings, but your views are still low, the problem probably isn't a restriction. The video simply didn't hook its first viewers.
How to get out of a restriction
- Check each video individually using the account check tool and analytics. Don't act blindly.
- File an appeal if you believe the decision was a mistake. For a video deemed ineligible for the For You feed, open the video → ... → "Analytics" → tap the notification → "Appeal." For a removed video, the "Appeal" button is in the decision notification itself. If your appeal is approved, the video will be restored or returned to the For You feed.
- Don't assume deleting the video helps. A strike remains on your account even if you delete the content. Only delete videos that genuinely violate the rules and for which your appeal was denied. This prevents your account from accumulating ineligible content.
- Wait for the strikes to expire. Each strike lasts 90 days. A full account restriction is temporary and lifts automatically once the account has less ineligible content.
- Complete the policy training. Starting September 24, 2026, TikTok offers optional training that can help you regain full access to the platform.
- Check new videos before publishing. The web version of TikTok Studio has a pre-check feature (Content check lite) that warns you if your video is unlikely to be recommended. It's not a guarantee, but it catches obvious problems.
- Do not create a new account to bypass a restriction. This is a separate violation and can get you banned.
Myths That Don't Work
| Advice From the Internet | What Actually Happens |
|---|---|
| "Delete the video and re-upload it." | The strike remains, and re-uploading can be flagged as duplicate or unoriginal content. |
| "Take a 14-day break." | There is no official waiting period. A strike lasts 90 days, and an account restriction is lifted once the ineligible content is removed. |
| "Buy a 'warm-up' service or fake engagement." | This is strictly prohibited. Fake metrics are removed, and the account can be restricted or banned. |
| "Check the video from another account." | Everyone's feed is different, so this type of check proves nothing. |
How Clippers Can Avoid Restrictions
Clipping other people's streams and podcasts is the riskiest area. TikTok is more likely to recommend a clip when your creative contribution is clear:
- Add your own voiceover or on-screen reaction.
- Provide context: explain what's happening and why it's important.
- Create your own edit: rearrange parts, highlight key moments, and add your own conclusion.
- Remove all third-party logos and watermarks from other platforms.
The safest approach is to work with the creator's permission, for example, through a streamer's or podcast's official clipping program. Furthermore, unoriginal videos are not eligible for TikTok's rewards program.
If you're creating videos for CPV (cost-per-view) briefs on a platform like Prime Oracles, all of this is doubly important. A video that TikTok doesn't show in the For You feed won't get views, which means it won't earn you anything.
